ACTEUR

Biographie :

Fils de parents qui travaillaient dans les milieux carcéraux, il fit tout d’abord ses études à la Fangin School of Dramatic Art avant de débuter sa carrière en 1938. On le verra en premier lieu sur les planches, partageant la vedette avec l’acteur Maurice Evans dans des productions comme "Henry IV, part 1 " (1939) et " Richard II "(1940) à Broadway.

Il fit par la suite son service militaire en Europe puis retourna se perfectionner à l’Actor’s Studio de Lee Strasberg une fois démobilisé. Il se produisit à nouveau à Broadway, obtenant d’excellentes critiques lorsqu’il remplaça Ben Gazzara dans celle de Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Comme tant d’autres, il se laissera attirer par le cinéma, y débutant en 1950 dans The Sleeping City, film policier mit en scène par le réalisateur George Sherman.

Apprécié par ce dernier, il est engagé pour tourner dans plusieurs de ses films : Target Unknown (film de guerre avec Mark Stevens dans le rôle principal), The Lone Hand, Tomahawk ou alors Vengeance à l’aube avant d’obtenir le premier rôle masculin dans La belle rousse du Wyoming. Il y partagea l’écran avec la ravissante Maureen O’Hara.

Un contrat l’amenant tourner en Europe pour le film 5 femmes marquées, Alex Nicol s’y plut et s’y installa avec sa famille afin de poursuivre une carrière qui le mènera chez Duilio Coletti, Carlo Lizzani, Luigi Camerini, Luigi Comencini, etc. Il terminera sa carrière après avoir tourné quelques westerns-spaghetti et tenter sa chance comme réalisateur où il n’eut guère de succès.

Revenu en Californie après s’être retiré du cinéma en 1987, il s’éteint à Montecito, entouré de ses enfants et de son épouse l’actrice Jean Fleming.
